Part 4- Nikki and Ray dealing with Ulcers

MID JUNE

Poor Ray has just been diagnosed with grade 4 ulcers, They will need treating initially  with Gastro guard from the vet and need to look into a long term management programme, it is very important we find the best feed to help prevent ulcers once they have (hopefully) cleared.

Becky (our vet) has advised that we carry on as normal with the exercise and to have him re scoped in 4 weeks time, At least this explains the weight issues.

July 2013

What a mine field it is researching for the right feed for a horse with ulcers is !

I have just noticed that Stacey from Hartpury Saddlery, is a stockist for Saracen feeds (which is one of the ones the vets recommended). Anyway, went to see Stacey and she was extremely impressed with her tour of the Saracens mill and the strict quality control they have at their factory,  and has arranged that I speak with Nikki McGee (The Local Saracens rep) & there team of experts.

Met today with Nikki at Hartpury Saddlery and she was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable She has recommended  2 Saracen feeds, the Relieve cereal free (important for ulcer sufferers) and low starch

 along with Saracen EquiJewel

http://www.saracenhorsefeeds.com/eventing/33-equi-jewel (for conditioned weight gain and energy),

we will get him started on it ASAP and keep you posted fingers crossed for regionals.

Part 3 Nikki and ray-dealing with ulcers

May 2013

Mud fever gone, but now have another wet related      problem…..liver fluke! Just been diagnosed by the vet through blood tests and dung samples.

At least that could be an explanation for the weight loss!!

All treated now and grass starting to come through, so hope to see an improvement very soon.

We are doing well in the dressage……almost there with the regional qualification—need 3 more prelim points before the end of June (watch this space)

June 2013

What a fab brilliant horse, we have just got 5 prelim points, so that’s it….we did it! Hope to go to the regional s in August, but I would just like to see an improvement in Rays overall condition.

Ray is not quite himself……..has been out on spring grass and getting plenty to eat, but still not putting on any weight (this picture is 2 weeks into a fresh new field of grass and all the other horses have blossomed) Vet is coming tomorrow, we are going to have full blood tests done,     Nothing untoward showing with bloods, so Becky Wall from Three Counties Vets has suggested further investigation.

Part 2- Nikki and rays diary- dealing with ulcers

Feb/ March 2013

Off to a good start……we have already qualified for the pet plan regional’s and are on our way to qualify for the summer prelim regional’s.
Just getting fed up with the wet weather!! Roll on spring.
Ray is doing well….settling in well, but still struggling to get him to eat properly…not a big eater and he is very slow…..could do with more condition, I am sure it will come as soon as Dr Green arrives!

April 2013

Ray has had quite bad mud fever (like a lot of the horses this year), so has been on antibiotics and bute. Anyway it has cleared now, but he appears to have lost weight….! Bit worried as the spring grass is late, so not going to put on any condition yet!!!

He is quite happy and we have had some really good schooling sessions with Hannah , she is getting us to concentrate on working long and low to try and build up his topline.

Still competing and doing well and collecting a few prelim points.

Nikki and Rays diary- dealing with ulcers

Jan 2013-

I bought Ray in Jan 2013 with a view to compete in BD and generally have a fun safe horse to enjoy….. well he is exactly that I am glad to say and so far we have quite successfully competed at Prelim level.

He was previously imported as a 7 year old and evented up till July last year, but had a bad fall XC and lost confidence, so the owner decided that he needed a less challenging life. He is 16.2hh, rising 13 yrs, black KWPN gelding and has a wonderful temperament and attitude and we will hopefully have a lot of fun together.

My goal is to qualify for Pet Plan regional’s and maybe BD summer regional’s
 this year

Keep posted for more...........................................................

Top tips to get your horse Showing ready with Nettex

Getting your horse ready to go showing can be a long and arduous process, especially in all this heat! So the Hartpury Saddlery Team have put together some of our favorite items from Nettex to help you out, and reduce the amount of time you need to spend making your horse look dashing.

Nettex have a fantastic range of no-rinse shampoos, which means you can ride your horse and instead of giving him a full bath after, you can wash him off as usual and just apply the shampoo with a quick sweat scrape after. There are several different smells you can choose from, including lavender and peppermint, however in this hot weather we suggest you use the citronella to help deter those pesky flies!

After your quick rinse, the use of Nettex main and tail detangler means that you can brush through his tail quickly in the morning without taking half it out with your brush. A quick spray over with a coat spray to repel the dust, dirt and grime is also a must to ensure quick grooming in the morning. Whether you plait in the morning or the night before, the Nettex plaiting spray gives a fantastic grip on the main to make plaiting your horse much easier.

So you get to the yard in the morning and your horse has very kindly covered himself in poo! How rude. Well never fear, the Nettex stain remover is the thing for you! It quickly removes stable and grass stains leaving him lovely once again. Make sure you have the Nettex sunblock in the lorry or car as you can use this on both yourself and your horse, no need to have multiple pots, one does all… Less to remember is always a bonus.

Once you are at your show, the eye and nose wipes ensure a clean face as they effectively remove any tear stains, and help you remove any marks he may have got on himself whilst in transit. A quick spray with the Nettex D.E.E.T based fly spray will help ensure the flies are deterred, so you don’t have to battle with them alongside everything else. The traditional hoof oil from Nettex ensures that your hooves are looking shiny and fabulous, without drying them out, and includes a brush. A quick spray with the Nettex hi-shimmer coat spray ensures even the dullest of coats is made to stand out, and off you go to look fabulous in the showing ring!

Happy showing!

Horse Health- Hartpury Saddlery's Tips

Maintaining good Horse Health,
 Tips from Hartpury Saddlery

Good horse health is essential to maintain in order to keep your horse, happy and healthy, and performing at his best. This is what most horse owners aim to achieve however with ever growing list of available supplements on the market, it can be difficult to know what to do.

Common reasons horses can lack condition and vitality include:  the stresses of travelling, changes in diets and/or the pressures of tough competing and changes of weather/seasons are another common time for deterioration in horse health and therefore these are key times to be aware of changes in your horses’ behaviour and overall performance. No matter what their circumstance, it is vital to keep on top of these horse health issues.

To aid and maintain top horse health the market provides a range of supplements and feeds that will supply your horse the key nutritional support to  prime health, resulting in that ‘top notch’ horse health you want for your companion! Hartpury Saddlery have put together a few best sellers that we love and think can help you achieve the very best for you horse.
NAF Pink powder is a great example of a supplement that provides your horse with optimum condition. This feed balancer contains live probiotic yeast which ensures nutritional support of the gut and is a product that gives clear reflection when used showing the overall improvement or maintainability in your horses’ health, which gives an effective impact on the overall performance of your horse. It is an easy and affordable way to ensure your horse maintains the best health possible.

Global herbs- Restore A liver supplement which revives, helps with movement, and supports general condition and brightness.  Results can be seen in a few days. This formula often enriches the colour of a horse's coat as the digestion improves.

Use if you want your horse to look like and be a 'picture of health'. Feed to horses that are in poor condition or are listless despite good feeding and worming, Routinely use Restore at each change of season - 4 times yearly. We recommend regular feeding every 2-3 months for competing horses and the elderly.

Restore can help with horse health when changes in feeding are needed, and is an excellent aid to convalescence and for generally helping maintain normal energy levels. Restore is often very helpful in supporting our other herbal products as it aids the digestion and absorption.
Trusted by you, chosen by us, 100% NAF pure garlic granules. One of the best known herbs in the world, garlic’s use for health support dates back to Roman times. Research now shows that the key compounds within garlic, including allicin, sulphur and vitamins, support it’s reputation. Garlic is recommended for general health and for day to day maintenance of respiratory health. For premium support of the respiratory system see Respirator and Respirator Boost. NAF Garlic Granules is chosen for it’s purity and strength.

Whilst these supplements can aid in the aim to achieve optimum horse health, If you have any concerns about your horses general health and well being always seek veterinary advice.
